RCAHMS Site Record for Lindores Abbey
Lindores Abbey was a Tironensian abbey
on the outskirts of Newburgh in Fife, Scotland. Now a much reduced
and overgrown ruin, it lies on the southern banks of the River Tay,
about 1-mile (1.6 km) north of the village of Lindores. The abbey
was founded as a daughter house of Kelso Abbey about 1191 (some
sources say 1178), by David, Earl of Huntingdon, brother of William
the Lion. The first abbot was Guido, Prior of Kelso, under whom the
buildings were mostly completed. The church, dedicated to the
Blessed Virgin and St. Andrew, was 195 feet (59 m) long, with
transepts 110 feet (34 m) long. Edward I of England, John Balliol,
David II, and James III were among the monarchs who visited Lindores
at different times.
The earliest record of scotch whisky is a 1494 commission from King
James IV to Friar John Cor of Lindores Abbey to make about 580 kg of
aquavitae. The abbey was sacked by a mob from Dundee in 1543, and
again by John Knox and his supporters in 1559. In the following
years the Abbey buildings were quarried as a source of building
stone for Newburgh, and a number of architectural fragments are
visible built into later structures in the town. The main upstanding
remains of the Abbey are: one of the gateways leading into the
monastic enclosure; the groin-vaulted slype, leading from the
cloister garth to the exterior of the Abbey; and parts of the
chancel walls and western tower of the church, although the ground
plan of the whole structure can still be traced. Sections of the
imposing precinct wall which once enclosed the abbey can also be
seen in fields to the south. Wooden panels of the early 16th century
survive from the Abbey in the Laing Museum, Newburgh and, reset in a
19th century cabinet, in St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, Dundee.

NEWBURGH
PARISH, CHARACTER ETC. OF THE PEOPLE.- The people are in
general active and industrious, and, with the usual
exceptions which occur almost invariably in manufacturing
and sea-port districts, merit the praise of sobriety. The
great bulk of them are attentive to the ordinances of
religion and the education of their children. The rising
generation are supplied from parish libraries with excellent
and instructive books. These are read with much interest;
and the time is not far distant, when Newburgh, which has
hitherto been noted for commercial enterprise, will also be
distinguished for a moral, religious, and a well-informed
people. "No person belonging to the parish of Newburgh,"
says Dr Stuart, " has suffered the punishment of death for
any crime within the period to which its records extend." To
this notice in the former Statistical Account, the writer of
the present one has only to add, that, in 1661, two women
belonging to the town were hanged at Cupar, accused of the
crime of witchcraft, and for causing, under the influence of
that " black art, the minister's house, Mr Lawrence
Oliphant, to be burnt." As in former times, " Newburgh
supplied the navy of Great Britain with steady,
well-behaved, and gallant men," the character of its seamen
still continues to be held in estimation. The number of
individuals or families engaged in trade are, Manufacturers,
13; corn-merchants, 4; grocers and other retailers, 21 ;
bakers, 9; butchers, 4; medical practitioners, 3; stationer,
1. The number of families, 530; Average number of children
in each, 5; Number of inhabited houses, 285 Number of Blind,
0; Number of Deaf and Dumb, 2; During the last three years
there have been 9 illegitimate Births in the parish. - April
1836 ( The Rev. John Anderson, Minister)

The House of
Moncrieffe, the residence of the ancient family of that name,
descended from Ramerus de Moncrieffe, who was keeper of the wardrobe
to Alexander I., was built in the seventeenth century; the grounds
are thickly planted with the usual trees, interspersed with horse-chesnut,
silver and spruce firs, lime, plane, and walnut, and the garden
contains, with many other rare plants, several from the Cape of Good
Hope and New South Wales. - from

Selina's sister
Isabella was married three times. She fainted and drowned in the
bath at age 41. She had one or two kids with each husband. Husbands
were: Richard Townsend (3 kids, last born in England - can't find
his death - probably England), Alexander McLeod, and Thomas
Whitehead Foster. It was interesting that she didn't seem to know
much about her father. In most records she named him as James. Once
it was recorded as William. She said he was deceased when he was
still living. Maybe that's what the mother told the children...
