RCAHMS Archaeological Notes for Kirkliston Parish Church

RCAHMS Archaeological Notes for The Cat Stane
RCAHMS Archaeological Notes for Cat Stane Long Cist Cemetery
Kirkliston's origins are
ancient. A church stood on a knoll overlooking the River Almond here in
the 1100s, part of an estate held by the Knights Templar. At the time
the settlement around it was known as Temple Liston. In 1312 the Order
of the Knights Templar was dissolved by Pope Clement V for a range of
alleged offences trumped up by King Philip IV of France. All of their
extensive land holdings in Scotland, previously administered from their
monastery at Temple, were passed to the Knights Hospitaller of the Order
of St John, and administered instead from Torphichen Preceptory. This
seems to be the point at which Temple Liston was renamed Kirkliston, and
much of the structure of the Templar church survives within Kirkliston
Parish Church... From the end of the 1700s alcohol started to feature
large in the village's economic life. In 1795 the Glen Forth Distillery
started operations here before later changing its name to the Lambsmiln
Distillery and subsequently to the more memorable Kirkliston Distillery.
By the 1880s and after a series of different owners, Kirkliston
Distillery was producing some 700,000 gallons of grain and malt whisky
each year. -

As I was a-wand'ring ae morning in spring,
I heard a young ploughman sae sweetly to sing;
And as he was singin', thir words he did say,?
There's nae life like the ploughman's in the month o' sweet May.
The lav'rock in the morning she'll rise frae her nest,
And mount i' the air wi' the dew on her breast,
And wi' the merry ploughman she'll whistle and sing,
And at night she'll return to her nest back again.

Saturnia
 Anchor-Donaldson Line, T.S.S.
Saturnia
The "Saturnia"
was built by C.Connell & Co,
Glasgow in 1910 for the
Donaldson Line of Glasgow. She
was an 8,611 gross ton ship,
length 456.3ft x beam 55.3ft,
one funnel, two masts, twin
screw and a speed of 14 knots.
There was accommodation for
250-2nd and 950-3rd class
passengers. Launched on
29/3/1910, she sailed on her
maiden voyage from Glasgow for
Quebec and Montreal on
11/6/1910. In Aug.1911, she
collided with an iceberg near
Belle Isle but completed her
homeward voyage. Her last voyage
commenced on 12/3/1925 when she
left Glasgow for Portland. She
was laid up until 1928 when she
was sold, and broken up in Italy
the following year. There was a
later (1927-1940) Italian liner
with the same name.
The Glasgow
shipping companies Anchor Line
(Henderson Brothers) and the
Donaldson Line both operated
services to Canada. In 1916 they
agreed to share these routes and
form a joint company,
Anchor-Donaldson, to operate the
services. Four Donaldson ships,
the Letitia, Saturnia, Cassandra
and Athenia, were transferred to
the new shipping line.
Anchor-Donaldson survived until
1935, when the liquidation of
Anchor Line (Henderson Brothers)
resulted in the termination of
the joint venture and Donaldsons
formed the Donaldson Atlantic
Line. |
John Fairley died on
March 11, 1922, in
Toronto, Ontario at the age of 69, and is buried at the Prospect
Cemetery, Toronto.
