1793 ..........

Robert Jardine was born on Jan 31, 1773, in Castlemains, Lochmaben. Castlemains was comprised of the Mains as well as the Castelmains cottages (both farmsteads) located a very short distance from Lochmaben Castle. "In roughly 1280, William Wallace gave the Lochmaben castle to Johnstone of Eskdale, who apparently was his kinsman. Sir John Johnstone, grandson of the aforementioned Sir John, was a highly active leader on the border and resisted the English quite well from 1377 through 1379. He fought against the English armies at the Battle of Solway Moss in 1378. The Johnstones were also at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388... During the Civil War, the Clan Johnstone supported the Royalist cause of King Charles. In 1633, King Charles I awarded lordship to the Johnstone chief, Sir James Johnstone, as the Lord Johnstone; ten years later Charles made him the Earl of Hartfell. After King Charles I was defeated in the Civil War, both the Johnstone chief and his eldest son were imprisoned in Dumbarton Castle and Edinburgh Castle. However, after the Stuart Monarchs returned to the throne, King Charles II rewarded the Johnstones' loyalty by granting Lord Hartfell the titles of Earl of Hartfell and Annandale, Viscount of Annan, and Lord Johnstone of Lochwood, Lochmaben, Moffatdale and Evandal. The Johnstones were later Jacobites." from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Johnstone

1802 ..........

Andrew Jardine died Nov 23, 1793 (from Monumental Inscriptions - Applegarth and Sibbaldie Parish -
January, 1972, George Gilchrist) leaving his wife to raise their children. David later provided William with enough money to attend medical school in Edinburgh and William went on to become a well-known surgeon. In 1802, at the age of 18, he served as ship's surgeon aboard the East India Company's Brunswick and by 1832 had established  Jardine, Metheson & Company, Ltd. in China. The Chinese referred to him as "Tai-Pan" or Great Manager.

1832 ..........

Jardine, Matheson & Company is formally registered July 1 by former East India Company merchant ship's surgeon William Jardine and his Scottish-born aristocratic junior partner James Matheson, 36, who 9 years ago purchased the 18-gun brig Curlew, renamed her the Jamesina, and has been using her to run opium from India into China (see 1820; Russell & Co., 1830). Now 48, the Scottish-born Jardine is known to the Chinese as "Iron-Headed Old Rat" because he refused to run from a beating at the gates of Guangzhou (Canton), where he tried to present a petitition. Moralists raise objections to the opium trade, but the British have been expanding poppy cultivation in India, and a new report states that "the monopoly of opium in Bengal supplies the Government with a revenue amounting in sterling money to £981,293 per annum . . . it does not appear advisable to abandon so important a source of revenue." Jardine will say in his company bulletin The Opium Circular, "If the trade is ever legalized, it will cease to become profitable from that time. The more difficulties that attend it, the better for you and for us." One sixth of British India's gross national product comes from opium exports, and those exports will reach 30,000 chests per year by 1835 (see politics, 1839). - From Answers.com World Chronolgy: 1832

Sir Robert Jardine (son of David Jardine of Muirhousehead)

Sir Robert Jardine, 1st Baronet (24 May 1825 - 17 February 1905) was a Scottish businessman and Liberal politician. Jardine was born at Edinburgh the son of David Jardine of Muir House, Lockerbie, Dumfries and his wife Rachel Johnstone. He was head of Jardine, Matheson and Co, merchants in China in 1865.[1]

The Ashburton constituency was abolished at the 1868 general election and he was elected instead at Dumfries Burghs.[3] In 1874 he changed seat again and stood unsuccessfully for Dumfriesshire. However he was elected at the next election in March 1880[4] and held the seat until he stood down at the 1892 general election.[5] Jardine was created 1st Baronet Jardine, of Castlemilk, Dumfries on 20 July 1885. Here are made homely chairs and tables, clogs and pattens, yokes for milk pales, chests for bride-linen, cradles and innumerable other articles." - Reproduced with acknowledgement to Carol Stubbs
