Donald Murdoch McCormick was also a
Schoolmaster.
A large and fine
standing stone, which stood above the ancient ferry to Iona, was
called "An Caitcheannach Mor" - "the great stone of the common", the
neighbouring land being called "The Common" (Catchean). It was
destroyed in 1863 through a great granite block falling on it from
quarrying operations in the neighbourhood. Traditionally it, and
other members of a series of standing stones, marked the route taken
by pilgrims going across Mull to Iona from Grass Point.

McCormick married John McCowan on Aug 21, 1849
A. McInnes, from
Creich said that in the 1850s there was a 100% increase in rent
where pasture was improved (as it had to be, since tenants who
remained were forced to develop areas like Creich on the north
side of the Ross - the more fertile south side was evacuated).
No compensation was given for houses vacated, and when
permission was given for new houses to be built, only "a
kailyard' of land was given. It was ruled that if a man died,
and his widow had a son less than 21 years old, she must vacate,
a rule "sometimes enforced, sometimes not."
"In the year 1850,
the old townships were reduced to large farms," said J. M'Cormick
[ Catherine's brother ] from Catchean croft, and continued,
"The harsh and cruel law of evictions formerly used has now given
way to the more modern and refined mode of grinding away our subject
by diminishing our means, which will eventually serve the purpose of
bringing us into abject poverty."

During the
1890s it was decided by the church on Iona that a Mission
Chapel should be built at Creich in the Ross of Mull and
dedicated to St Erana. Ernan, formerly Prince of Donegal,
was uncle to St Columba and one of a group of twelve
followers who came with Columba to Iona to set up and manage
the Iona Monastery. Through the efforts of the then parish
minister, the Rev. Archibald MacMillan (his gravestone is in
the church yard), money was raised to build the church.
Plans of the church were approved by Presbytery in 1897 and
a site chosen to benefit the community.
